During the war between Denmark and Sweden in the late 1670's, Hans Olufsen Madvig lost all his possesions and all his property in Blekinge, because of his faithfullness to the Danish king Christian V. On 09.03.1681 he was given a position as forest supervisor on Bornholm.
Escaping from what had now become Sweden, Hans Olufsen applied the name of his homevillage, Madvig, as his sirname. The name of the village has later been changed by the swedes to Matvik. The farm where Hans Olufsen lived was the biggest in the village and was called Madvigsgaard (madvig's farm). This is still the name of the farm, although the spelling has been changed there as well.
